Cataract removal at Eyemed Ophthalmology Center

Homepage > Cataract treatment

The appearance of cataracts, and their subsequent development, are associated with the body's natural aging processes.

Therefore, sooner or later it will happen to each of us. Problems usually begin after the age of 55, but there are cases of congenital or acquired cataracts much earlier. It also happens that the disease is the result of trauma or arises as a result of occupational work (such as “welder’s cataract”).

Regardless of the cause, cataracts always lead to clouding of the lens of the eye. In a healthy person, the lens is perfectly transparent, providing a clear image. The development of the disease causes a loss of clarity. Untreated cataracts lead to total blindness. It is difficult to predict how quickly the opacity will progress. Therefore, it is best to have surgery to remove the cataract in its early stages. See the benefits of this procedure.

Safety of cataract-removal surgery

Fortunately, regardless of the causes of cataracts, they can be effectively treated, but only surgically. General contraindications to this type of surgery must be very rare, so the chances of being cured of cataracts are very high. Note that at Eyemed your eyesight is professionally handled by internationally renowned specialists. We put state-of-the-art medical equipment at their disposal.

Now at Eyemed, you can choose EDOF lens implants. These are high-end premium lenses that provide excellent distance vision and close-up images. This allows you to comfortably, for example, drive a car or work at a computer without glasses. EDOF lenses perfectly correct astigmatism and reduce higher-order optical defects. They also have special filters that improve night vision comfort by reducing glare.

We have already performed tens of thousands of various eye surgeries. Each year we perform more than 3,000 cataract removal procedures. Effectively, and safely, with virtually no complications. If the maximum safety of cataract surgery is important to you, we invite you to the Ophthalmology Clinic, where a team of more than 20 outstanding specialists is waiting just for you. We will see you at Eyemed.

Before and after the surgery. What do you need to know? (click and download some tips)

Advantages of cataract surgery

Cataract surgery involves replacing the cloudy intraocular lens with an artificial lens implant. The surgery is performed once in a lifetime. Here are the most important advantages of cataract removal in Eyemed:

  • the use of the MISC method eliminates postoperative astigmatism that results from the use of other surgical techniques,
  • during the surgery we can also correct other visual defects, so you immediately gain full visual acuity,
  • surgery financed by the National Health Fund, a wide selection of lenses with advanced correction of astigmatism or presbyopia, including the latest EDOF-grade implants.
  • Free specialized cataract diagnostics.

Qualification visit for cataract surgery

Before the surgery, we need to thoroughly diagnose your condition. You will have all the tests done directly with us, saving you time. The qualifying visit itself takes one to three hours. During this time, we will perform a specialized diagnosis of your visual system. This will also allow us to match the type of lenses to your lifestyle or work activity.

A qualifying visit for cataract surgery consists of an examination with an optometrist and a medical consultation. The optometrist will use specialized equipment to accurately diagnose your condition. The doctor, on the other hand, will take a detailed medical history, perform a painless slit lamp examination and discuss the details of cataract surgery with you.

Cataract symptoms

Are you observing worrying symptoms in yourself? Or maybe you just want to know how to recognize cataracts? Remember that the initial symptoms of this condition can be easily overlooked, as the disease is not accompanied by pain or even congestion of the eyes. Make an appointment at our clinic if other symptoms appear, which include:

  • myopia or varifocals
  • hazy vision, double vision, image distortion,
  • sensitivity to brighter light,
  • problems with color perception,
  • feeling of visual fatigue more often than before.

How to prepare for the procedure?

Before cataract removal surgery at Eyemed, you should see your family doctor for an opinion on your current condition and any recommendations.

On the day of surgery:

  • do not consume fluids for 2 hours before the scheduled surgery,
  • do not consume food for 6 hours before the scheduled eye surgery,
  • refrain from consuming alcohol and beverages containing caffeine,
  • immediately after the procedure, contact of the eye with shampoo should be avoided, so it is advisable to wash your hair before the procedure,
  • you should refrain from wearing makeup and jewelry,
  • take pajamas or a tracksuit, flip-flops, and a light snack with you,
  • be accompanied by a companion when returning from the clinic.

Cataract surgery step by step

The operation is completely painless, as the procedure is performed under local anesthesia with drops. An anesthesiologist watches over you at all times.

1

The surgeon will make a micro-incision, the length of which will not exceed 2.2 mm. This minimizes the need to wear glasses for distance vision, and it will take you only a few weeks to return to full activity.

2

Through the incision, the surgeon will remove the cloudy lens. In its place, with the help of a microscope with Verion's 3D computerized visualization system, he will apply an artificial lens that will serve you seamlessly for a lifetime.

3

The entire procedure will take 15 to 20 minutes. After it is completed, you will spend about half an hour more in the recovery room. You will then go home under the care of a companion.

4

And now the best news: you will notice an improvement in your visual acuity immediately after the surgery.

What should you keep in mind after the surgery?

After the surgery, you should perform an eye check. In the first weeks after surgery, avoid shocks, and exertion and generally take it easy. Give up sports and strenuous activities for this time. You will return to full activity about a month after surgery. The micro-needling will heal within 2 or 3 months. It will take about the same amount of time to stabilize your visual acuity.

NHF financing nfz

Cataract surgery under the National Health Fund is performed a maximum of 2 - 3 weeks after qualification, but most often the patient is operated on within a few days of the examination.

Standard replacement of the diseased and cloudy physiological intraocular lens with an artificial lens implant without advanced astigmatism correction and presbyopia correction. The implant
financed by the National Health Fund filters to improve color vision and contrast.

ONLY AT EYEMED:
During qualification for the procedure, not only cornea-induced visual defects but also Higher-Order Aberrations are examined. For patients who require surgery planning with HOA in mind, the procedure is performed with analysis of corneal higher-order aberrations.

MISC Method

Microincision Cataract Surgery is a method of cataract removal in which an incision of less than 2 millimeters is made. Less invasive than other methods, the procedure minimizes the risk of complications, and discomfort and noticeably speeds up your return to full activity after the procedure.

The main proven advantages of MICS are control and avoidance of surgically induced corneal astigmatism and reduction of post-operative corneal aberrations. In addition, a high degree of surgical innovation, the use of advanced surgical platforms for phacoemulsification with pressurized flow control, and new surgical instruments make it possible to perform highly sophisticated cataract surgery.

The more precisely surgeons operate, the better results the patient notices, so at Eyemed we use state-of-the-art medical equipment for cataract surgery. Specialized equipment allows us to properly select lenses so that after the operation you not only see better, but no longer need glasses.

Cataract surgery - how to register for the procedure?

A patient does not need a referral to sign up for pre qualification for cataract surgery. Such a visit is free of charge and does not take long. The patient is then enrolled by registration for a corresponding date for the full qualification visit and the procedure.

At the Eyemed Ophthalmology Center, we perform more than a dozen cataract removal surgeries every day. We perform nearly 3,000 procedures every year. We have a specially prepared operating room for this type of surgery with the highest sterility rivaling microbiology laboratories. We also perform the procedure using the world’s best technology.

The most modern surgical method for cataract removal, computer-assisted by the VERION system – is recommended for patients who have cataracts and corneal astigmatism. The use, at the time of surgery, of Alcon’s state-of-the-art Panoptix Toric trifocal toric lens implant, allows excellent vision for looking far away, corrects corneal astigmatism, and allows reading without the use of glasses. In addition, it allows excellent vision in patients who have worn glasses all their lives due to astigmatism, farsightedness, nearsightedness, or using glasses for reading. Once our physiological intraocular lens, which has been destroyed by disease, is removed, a Panoptix Toric lens implant from Alcon is implanted, so that the patient does not need to use any glasses after this procedure – neither for looking away nor for reading, since the lens implant allows for perfect vision even if the patient has worn glasses all his life due to astigmatism, farsightedness or myopia, or has used reading glasses in addition.
